Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting nootropic that acts on a cocktail of neurotransmitters in order to better cognitive function. While Modafinil is typically used for aid in sleeping disorders (prescribed for Narcolepsy in the United States) it has become increasingly popular as of late as a wakefulness-promoting nootropic and powerful stimulant used to increase brain function. Personally, Modafinil works as a nootropic by increasing energy, and motivation, as well as one’s ability to focus and the desire to work in the brain.
While many articles go into detail about what Modafinil does, and how to use it with regards to dosing, they don’t explain what you’ll actually “feel” when you take Modafinil. When you take Modafinil, it typically takes around an hour to kick in. Once it does however, the first hour is the most euphoric, and as such the most productive, so be sure to start working right away. Sometimes to best “feel” Modafinil, it’s good to start working, as you then realize the significant effects it has on your energy, productivity, ability to focus, and ability to work. After this, Modafinil will kick-in very smoothly and will last for the entire day, even at just a 100 milligram dosage (though you may have to increase your dosage eventually over time). Modafinil typically lasts for 12 to 15 hours on a single dose.
What is Modafinil, and How does it Give you Energy?
Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting drug and a powerful stimulant, and acts on a specific group of neurotransmitters in order to give its energy boosting and wakefulness-promoting effects, the main of which are dopamine, serotonin, norepineprhine, and histamine (the primary wakefulness-promoting neurotransmitter.)
Dopamine–Dopamine is the primary motivating neurotransmitter, and controls natural things such the drive to eat, sleep, breed and exercise. Dopamine is also released when something is accomplished, such as when achievements in business, sports or education are accomplished. Modafinil hacks into the brain’s dopamine receptors and increases the reuptake of it, leading to higher levels of the chemical in critical regions of the brain, such as the nucleus accumbens and frontal lobes. Unlike Psychostimulants, Modafinil does so to a lesser degree, making it safer but still very effective.
Serotonin-Serotonin is one of the primary relaxant neurotransmitters, and is also key for focus. When blended with dopamine, it can have a clean, clear effect that allows for great clarity of thought, energy, focus and increased learning.
Histamine-Histamine is the primary wakefulness neurotransmitter, and Modafinil’s primary mechanism of action. By increasing the amount of this neurotransmitter, it helps those dealing with Narcolepsy and other sleeping disorders, and also helps to keep those awake that are healthy, for long periods of time.
Norepinephrine-A neurotransmitter similar to adrenaline, it gives the physical stimulation of the stimulant drug, and gives the “kick in the pants” that most nootropic users are looking for.
Typical dosages of Provigil or Modafinil range from 1-400 milligrams daily. 100 milligrams is typically the minimum effective dosage, the dosage at which good effects are felt, and 400 milligrams is the ceiling, anything higher than 400 milligrams in a single dosing setting can have additional excess side effects. Do not take 400 milligrams until you’ve tried lower dosages and are an experienced user of Modafinil.
Side effects of Modafinil include headache, dehydration, insomnia, tiredness sweating, jitters and loss of appetite. This is not a definitive list of the side effects you may feel whilst taking Modafinil.
Better wakefulness throughout the day, a mild euphoria, and fantastic clarity of thought. Modafinil, if used regularly, can significantly skyrocket productivity and overall mental prowess.
