The History of Modafinil

During the late 1950’s a French chemist named Michel Jouvet soon discovered the complexities of sleep using new techniques of the times such as E.E.G.
scans. This led Jouvet to discover what is commonly referred to as the REM
state of sleep. These sleep periods determined the stage of wakefulness one
might experience. These discoveries led him to examine sleep disorders such as
Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a chronic brain disorder that involves poor control of
sleep-wake cycles. People with narcolepsy experience periods of extreme
daytime sleepiness and sudden, irresistible bouts of sleep that can strike at any
time.  These “sleep attacks” usually last a few seconds to several minutes.

Later on in 1970’s Jouvet created many different chemical compounds targeted
at combatting narcolepsy. The first rendition of Modafinil ever created was a drug
called Adrafinil. Unfortunately, Adrafinil was shown to have traces of harmful
chemicals. After many years of hard work and research Jouvet created Modafinil.
Modafinil was the ticket to combatting Narcolepsy, without the harmful side
affects associated with its predecessor, Adrafinil.
Modafinil was intended to “decrease extreme sleepiness due to narcolepsy and
other sleep disorders such as difficult/irregular breathing during sleep.” In
addition, the drug was prescribed to battle “shift work sleep disorder” (SWSD) —
in layman’s terms, it helps users who work at night stay awake through their

from sleep disorders loved the product.

Through more rigorous research and development, scientist discovered Modafinil
